The Gymnastics Chair is a component unit of the State University of Physical Education and Sports of the Republic of Moldova, which carries out its activity based on the legal regulations provided by the Education Code of the Republic of Moldova (no. 152 of July 17, 2014), Development Statute and Strategy institutional (2015-2020, 2021-2025) of SUPES and other own normative regulations.
As an important subdivision of the academic structure, the Gymnastics Chair was founded on September 17, 1968 by order of the Ministry of Public Education no. 272 within the Faculty of Physical Education of the State Pedagogical Institute "Ion Creanga". The first head of the department was appointed Mr. Filipenco Efim, PhD in pedagogical sciences, university professor. During 1970-1974 this position was held by Mr. Tolmaciov Pavel, PhD in pedagogical sciences, university professor. Subsequently, the following were appointed to the position of head of the department: Efim Filipenco (1974-1985) was appointed head of the chair; Teodor Grimalschi, PhD in pedagogical sciences, university professor (1985-1998 and 2000-2011); Sergiu Danail, PhD in pedagogical sciences, university professor (1998 - 2000); Victor Buftea, PhD in pedagogical sciences, associate professor (2011-2018); Moga Carolina, PhD in pedagogical sciences, associate professor, 2019-present.

Due to the achievements obtained by teachers by capitalizing on the experience gained, the gym is an integral part, which, by incorporating education with scientific research, contributes to the training of highly qualified specialists for various types of physical education and sports institutions. The 17 teachers of the chair organize and carry out a wide range of teaching, methodical and scientific activities offering a wide range of opportunities for young people in our country and abroad, thus contributing to a continuous increase in the level of physical and intellectual development of students , master's and doctoral students.
The basic purpose of the Gymnastics department is to train, improve and retrain, at higher level, specialists and scientists in the field of physical culture and sports, promote scientific research and implement their results in practical activity.
Based on the established purpose, the following objectives have been set within our subdivision:
- carrying out the instructive-educational and research activity of the teachers in accordance with the national and international standards of excellence;
- increasing the quality of training of teachers, doctoral students, master students and students for scientific training by organizing scientific conferences, seminars, round tables, master classes, etc .;
- adapting the content of the university curriculum to the disciplines of the department in accordance with the requirements of the national normative acts and with the international perspectives, improving their content and approaching them based on interdisciplinarity;
- establishing sustainable partnerships with other organizations in academia, sports and business, as well as conducting fundamental studies according to the research directions of the university;
- development and implementation in the instructive-educational process of modern educational technologies (including IT);
- the involvement of the collaborators of the Gymnastics department in national and international scientific research projects, obtaining through this beneficial results both for the subdivision and for the university.
In order to achieve the established goal and objectives, the gymnastics department has two halls (artistic gymnastics and fitness) equipped with inventory, equipment and equipment necessary for the efficient development of the instructive-educational and training process. We also have a methodological center and a scientific laboratory, where practical lessons and some scientific research are carried out. The services of the gymnasiums also benefit the groups of young athletes at the specialized trainings.
The priority scientific research directions of the department are in line with those examined by the entire academic body of SUPES.
In order to ensure a high level of the instructive-educational process, the professors of the department have combined their efforts towards the continuous improvement of the research process, oriented towards the administration, design and monitoring of the scientific activity, by ensuring the scientific-methodological support with truthfully argued materials. organization and development of conferences, seminars, scientific forums, master classes, competitions, elaboration of monographs, textbooks, articles in international scientific journals listed ISI, category B, B +, and C, articles in scientific collections, theses, etc. In this sense, the department obtained a result of 67% of specialists with scientific titles and didactic degrees. The high level of professional skills of these teachers has essentially contributed to the training of true personalities, able to face the challenges of time and to become leaders in multiple spheres of activity.
So far, with the contribution of the members of the department, 2 theses of doctor habilitat and over 35 doctor in pedagogical sciences.
During the doctoral studies, the members of the Grimalschi T. department, PhD univ. prof. ; Buftea V. dr. habil, univ. prof.; Aftimiciuc O. dr. habil., univ. prof., Jurat V. PhD, univ prof. ; are qualified with the right to lead doctoral theses in the specialty: 533.04 - Physical education, sports, kinetotherapy and recreation.
The achievements obtained based on the scientific-methodical activity of the teachers within the Gymnastics chair are presented in multiple valuable works such as: 11 textbooks, 23 monographs, over 40 university courses and methodological guides, over 50 methodical recommendations, 7 dictionaries, 2 compendiums , more than 60 articles in scientific journals from the Web of Science databases, with ISI, more than 150 scientific articles of category B, B + and C, more than 550 articles in scientific collections and more than 75 theses at scientific conferences and congresses, and scientific-methodical, participation in various forums, national and international scientific seminars, etc.
During the entire period of activity, at the Gymnastics Chair, more than 500 athletes have perfected their sportsmanship, including international masters of sports, masters of sports; candidates in masters and other categories.
The students of the gymnastics chair participated in various international sports forums, becoming winners, as follows:
- Roșca Ștefan - participant in the Paralympic Games (London, 2012 place IX); winner (second place) at the European Para Powerlifting Championship, 2013, Alexin, Russia;
- Butucea Vladimir (master student) - winner, second place (left hand) and third place (right hand) at the European Parade Armwrestling Championship (people with disabilities), 14-21.05.2017, Katowice, Poland; winner, 2nd place (left hand) and 3rd place (right hand) at the World Para Armwrestling Championship (people with disabilities), 01-11.09.2017 Budapest, Hungary and at the World Para Armwrestling Championship (people with disabilities), 2019, Romania;
- Valentir Andrei - 3rd place at the European Paralympics Championship (people with disabilities), 2018, Germany.
The Emeritus Coach of the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Prodan Dumitru, obtained special merits in the training process of Paralympic athletes who competed in 3 editions of the Paralympic Games, as follows: Beijing Paralympic Games 2008 (athlete Larisa Marinenkova - 8th place); London 2012 Paralympic Games (athletes Roșca Ștefan - 9th place and Marinenkova Larisa - participant); Rio-de-Janeiro Paralympic Games 2016 (athletes Marinenkova Larisa - 7th place and Spătaru Oxana - 10th place).
Also, during his career, coach Prodan Dumitru prepared multiple winners and participants of the World and European Championships and Cups in the Paralympic events of Para Powerlifting, Para Athletics and Para Armwrestling.
Some members of the gymnastics department are involved in various profile activities, being members of the specialized federations, of the Republican Olympic Council, of the non-governmental organizations, etc. Thus, through involvement in the targeted activities, they continue to establish collaborative relationships with departments, faculties, institutions in the country and abroad in accordance with the provisions of the Education Code, the University Charter and the SUPES Institutional Development Strategy (2021- 2025).
