The Chair of Athletics, a scientific and methodological centre for the staff in physical culture and sports training, was founded in 1950 within the State Pedagogical University “Ion Creangă”. It is the oldest subdivision of the University.
The teaching staff is presented by highly professional former sportsmen who worked during different periods of time, and some of them are still working at the chair. Among them are: Igor Delazari, Artur Erohin, Constantin Scripcenco, Anatolii Gorbunov, Iurii Cupțov, Alexandr Gorașcenco, Andrei Lazu, Svetlana Svecla; Merited Coaches of the Republic of Moldova: Nicolai Curennoi, Artur Erohin, Valentin Galcinschi, Nicolai Cașeli, Vasilii Losev, Alexandr Slivco, Grigore Iliin, Constantin Scripcenco, Lazari Povestca, Anatolii Stativca and Petru Bria.

The main scientific research directions of the chair are:
- Professional training of specialists in the field of physical culture;
- Physical education in pre-university and university education;
- Sports training theory and methodology.
For years there were developed and published about 1300 scientific and methodical works (20 monographs, 7 manuals, 60 methodical works). Over a thousand articles have been published in journals and compendiums of national and international scientific conferences.
The chair cooperates closely with the research centers and specialized departments of Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Belorussia, Ukraine and other CIS countries.
During the last five years the members of the chair participated in numerous international conferences and symposia that took place in Moldova, Russia, Romania and Ukraine.
Nowadays, the members of the chair Grigore Iliin, Povestca Lazari, Gorașcenco Alexandru in cooperation with the Academy of Sciences of Moldova carry out the institutional research project 20.80009.1606.39 „Monitorizarea științifico-pedagogică și asigurarea medico-biologică a procesului de antrenament al sportivilor din loturile naționale pentru pregătirea către Jocurile Olimpice, campionatele mondiale și europene”, The aim of this project is the scientific justification, development of innovative training technologies and their implementation in the training process of national teams of Moldova.
Since 1998 more than 23 pedagogical science dissertations have been defended under the guidance of the Chair lecturers.
Lots of the chair graduates are highly qualified experts. They work in different educational institutions in Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Ireland, France, Spain, USA, Canada, Italy and in many other countries of the world.
The chair has a scientific and methodical laboratory that is well equipped for the implementation of scientific research in order to improve the process of sportsmen and teaching staff’s training in sport and physical culture (athletics). The chair staff permanently improves the educational process, based on the Strategy of the institutional development of SUPES (2020-2024). It assumes the development and implementation of new conceptual positions based on the complex of innovative activities according to the European standards.
